Haiti Youth Retreat – 2012

Racing around pylons as a group

We’re getting ready for the Youth Retreat in February, 2012!   The theme will be “Talking with God.”  Lesson plans are in the works and we already know of some things we would love to have for the retreat.  Part of the retreat will include a session on honest communication with God.  We are going to talk about the masks we wear, in front of others, AND God.   But God knows who we really are!

We are also planning lots of games and fun, so take a look at the needs list below and help us out wherever you can!

Needs List:

  • Your Prayers! – Everyone can provide this, and it’s what we need most!
  • 200 plain white masquerade masks for the youth to decorate themselves.  Something like the masks at this link.   Got these today!  1/7/12
  • Lots of Sharpie (or similar) markers in multiple colors that will write on the plastic masks.  Thanks to Dottie and Barb, we’re close on these.  A few more colors other than red-blue-black would be good otherwise we can make do with what we have.  The rest are on the way, Thanks Marni!
  • Glue dots.  Something like this link.  Thanks Don and Liz!
  • 100 tongue depressors – Barb got 100 of these, but even more would be cool.  Mary is getting some more!
  • 50 dice, all the same size (normal size) or 4 boxes of dominoes
  • 25 ping pong balls  Dottie, Eric and Barb got these.  Thanks!
  • 4 empty Klenex boxes  Thanks!
  • 4 old belts  Thanks Eric
  • 5 tent poles (fiberglass fold-up kind)
  • 200 fine tip washable, color markers.  (Cheap 10-per-pack from dollar store will do.)  Thanks Liz and Barb!
  • 200 3×5 index cards   Eric and Barb
  • 10 rolls scotch tape  Eric and Barb .  . . on a roll!  😉
  • 550 white Q-tips  Thanks Dottie and Barb.
  • 1 broom handle
  • 160 or more pairs of foam ear plugs  Liz ordered these.  Thanks Liz, and pray they arrive in time!
  • Soccer ball(s) & small pump – new/used/worn is fine.   (I deflate them to pack them.)  Tom & Dottie, and Dakie, Thanks!
  • Duct Tape. Thanks Barb and Liz.
  • Scotch Tape
  • 1 ream copy/printer paper
  • Sidewalk chalk
  • French or Creole bibles
  • 160 or more small notepads to hand out to the kids for taking notes.  Different colors would be great for “grouping” the kids for games.    Examples can be seen here and here.  The best price may be some place like the Dollar store or Big Lots.  Perhaps several people could each get some to share the cost.  Don & Liz, Dakie & Sam, Marni and Barb (Plus some help from Christina at OfficeMax) got this one covered.   Thanks!
  • Some Dollar store type prizes  (reasonably small & light is better) to give to game winners, volunteers, etc.  We have a stash and more on the way!   Thanks to Barb, Dottie, Liz, Tammy, Marni, Dakie and others . . .
  • Candy and gum to give out (Bubble gum, and small individally wrapped candy such as Starbursts, Tootsie rolls, etc.) Thanks to a lot of folks!

Check back often, I’ll be adding to the list as we build the agenda for the retreat, and updating the list to show the things that have already been provided.  I need all materials by February 10th so I can finish up the loose ends before the trip!

Thanks so much to all of you who donated supplies and funds. If I didn’t mention your name, please forgive me, but . . . God knows you.   I believe God is going to make this one of the best youth retreats EVER!   Eric Denton and I will be leaving on the 17th of February and coming back on the 23rd.  We appreciate your help, prayers, and support in the service of Christ Jesus our Lord.

May His Kingdom come,

Mark

Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, And to present you faultless Before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy, To God our Savior, Who alone is wise, Be glory and majesty, Dominion and power, Both now and forever. Amen.

  1. We already got the masks. I also ordered 4 French bibles today. Eric got the ping pong balls. Still needs lot of other stuff, and prayers!

  2. You guys are so wonderful. My heart is still just overflowing with all the blessings God has provided through your hearts and hands. Your gifts of both money and supplies are a shining tribute to the Love of God, bursting on the scene in a very real and magnificent way.

    May God Be Glorified!
